Trial Simulation

Being able to trial ABW simulations has just become easier.

Playing against one cyber player for two decision periods, participants can choose from four online simulations, Hospitality, Retail, Manufacturing and IT.

At the end of each decision period a short report will be generated showing share price, together with current financial data on Operations, Finance, Marketing and Performance.

It’s lots of fun and will give you an appreciation of the types of decisions your students will be making during their participation in an ABW Program.

If you would like to take them for a test run, simply contact us on (02) 9630 3933 or abw@abw.org.au for the website address.

ABW Retail Simulation

The Retail Simulation has proven to be quite popular with ABW participants.

Based on a Consumer Electronics store, participants are challenged to take over and run the company for a simulated 2 year period or 8 quarters.

The simulation models a proprietor owned business, where performance is assessed by the store/s profitability, market share, turnover, growth and efficiency.

For more information about the Retail Simulation please email abw@abw.org.au or contact us on (02) 9630 3933

Stock Market Challenge

Be among the fist schools in Australia to utilise our newest enterprise education program, the Stock Market Challenge (SMC).

The Stock Market Challenge is not run like other ABW programs, with SMC you pay one fixed price, giving you unlimited use of the software for your licensed one or two year period. You can run it as often as you wish with as many students as you like. Also, you get to choose the way in which you'd like it to be run, with a single class or a whole cohort, in a single day or over several lessons. It's perfect for classrooms periods as each simulated day takes just over twenty minutes to complete, giving you the flexibility to fit SMC into your curriculum.

There are other simulated stock market programs out there that illustrate some of the elements of share trading, but none like SMC, which engages students in a stock market experience where each student has a clear role in this truly multi media approach to enterprise learning, where the class room or school hall becomes the trading floor.

Observe programs in action

We have schools all over Australia running our one week in-school program and they are more than happy to have visiting teachers come along to observe their final day’s events.  These events include the judging of their student companies’ oral presentations, trade shows and video commercials.  This is a time when visitors have the opportunity to see ABW students in action as they strive to receive high scores in all categories from the judges.  Visiting teachers will be able to talk to students, mentors and teachers in order to learn more about ABW programs and how they could be instigated at their school.

If you would like to find out if there are schools nearby running the ABW program, please contact Sandie McKenzie on 1300 786 777 or email sandie.mckenzie@abw.org.au for further information.

Tasmanian Schools introduce new Manufacturing Studies subject

In 2008 Tasmanian Schools introduced the new subject ‘Manufacturing Studies’.

It provides students with an opportunity to understand technical aspects of manufacturing, including the basic principles of modern manufacturing practice.

The Hutchins School in Sandy Bay were the first school to introduce this pre tertiary subject in 2008.  As an introduction to the program, The Hutchins School students participated in the ABW Manufacturing Simulation. This gave them insight into the complete running of a Manufacturing Company.

Tony Greve, Teacher of Manufacturing Studies at The Hutchins School said “The boys and I found that the simulation gave a fantastic grounding not only in management but also in the concepts of production, manufacturing, quality, sales & marketing and interrelationships between each. It served as a great lead into the proper course….which in turn develops many of the concepts originally experienced in the simulation. I will definitely be using it again next year”.

ABW Supports Outcomes for VCAL

ABW provides a medium for attaining many outcomes across all strands of VCAL. ABW has mapped the program to the Foundation, Intermediate and Senior Levels for the work related skills and personal development skills strands.

ABW students are provided with a myriad of information and gain knowledge of one of the manufacturing, hospitality, retail or information technology industries. Participation in the program facilitates the development of teamwork, interpersonal and communication skills that are necessary to function in the workplace.

Jenny Langford, St Joseph's College Mildura says:

"We run the ABW program and found that it was an excellent way to cover the learning outcomes and criteria of the VCAL strands. The program engaged students with a hands on program, a real experience to enable students to develop and demonstrate the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to be part of a team and take on a role in business. ABW provides an alternative to generating specifically designed tasks that meet all assessment criteria.

VCAL is all about intergrated curriculum and this provides opportunities in all four strands. Students have to communicate, work together, meet deadlines and develop a sense of the costs and responsibilities of decision making.

I thoroughly recommend the ABW program to any teacher wishing to provide quality learning experiences for their students".

Provide your students with a unique case study for the VCE Business Management Course

The Victorian Business Management course requires students to apply and analyse a number of case studies on the following topics;

  • Management and Change
  • Operations Management
  • Human Resource Management

The simulation used in an ABW program equips students with a unique case study, which can easily be adapted and applied to the VCE Business Management Course. It gives students undertaking ABW a competitive advantage in the VCE exam, because their case study will be flexible and unique.

The simulation also assists students who are undertaking the VET Certificate II in Small Business Practice, as it enables students to apply the concepts of running a business to a realistic example.

In an ABW program students take over the key management roles within an established company and make the decisions necessary to run this company in a simulated marketplace. Their actions and decisions help them in designing a case study that will address the core topics in the Business Management course and aids students' comprehension of the cause and effect of real company business decisions.
